Japan Guide 2023/06/21

The municipal hospital in Kasugai City, Aichi Prefecture revealed that there had been a medical accident in which a teenage patient died after undergoing surgery for hemorrhoids.

According to the hospital, in 2021, the patient bled heavily and died of hemorrhagic shock.

As a result of the investigation by the Accident Investigation Commission, instituted after the accident, it was found that adequate observation of the postoperative physical changes had not been carried out, and “cardiotonic drugs” should be administered as a treatment after the cardiorespiratory arrest and the nurse delivered by mistake the “sedative” to the doctor and accidentally administered it.

After receiving a report from the Accident Investigation Committee, the hospital admitted that it was a medical accident and apologized to the bereaved family on June 7, 2023.

The hospital plans to retrain its medical staff to respond appropriately to sudden changes in a patient’s condition.
