Brazilian is arrested on suspicion of smuggling 1.2 kilos of marijuana by international mail

The Kyoto Prefectural Police’s Organized Crime Countermeasures Division 3 and other departments said on the 8th that they discovered dried cannabis in a cardboard box with food.

A Brazilian was arrested for attempted marijuana smuggling, Brazilian Kaue Murakami (ムラカミ・カウエ), 35 years old, resident in the city of Kyoto, he received a box of food by international mail with marijuana. The order was from the United States to Kyoto.

He admitted to the allegations, saying, “I was invited by an acquaintance.”

On August 1, he was accused of conspiring with acquaintances to hide around 1.2 kg of dried cannabis (equivalent to a retail price of around 7,668,000 yen) in a cardboard box containing food sent to his home from United States, by international mail.

According to Osaka Customs and other sources, the cardboard arrived at Narita Airport about a week later and was transported overland to Kansai International Airport.

Osaka Customs found suspicious shadows of cannabis through X-ray inspections.

Osaka Customs conducted a joint investigation with the prefectural police and on the 6th of this month accused Murakami of violating the Customs Act with the Kyoto District Prosecutor’s Office.
