Peony

Peony (ボタン) is a genus of plant belonging to the Paeoniaceae family, with approximately 80 species and the height of the tree is about 100 to 150 cm (peony = 牡丹).

The peony is a plant of wild origin that emerged in Asia, and is also native to southern Europe and western United States and Canada. She is also called the rose without thorns, with direct association with the Virgin Mary.

In Japan and China, the peony means wealth and nobility. Therefore, it is important for you to know that the peony is associated with a happy life.

It is said that the peony was brought from China as a medicinal plant in the 8th century during the Nara period, but later began to be cultivated for ornamental purposes during the Edo period. However, only a few Edo period bud varieties survive, and many of the varieties grown today were produced after the Meiji era.

Peonies bloom from April to June, and the best time to see them is from late April to May. There is also a two-season kanbotan that blooms in spring and autumn, and you can enjoy the flowers from November to January.

You can enjoy a wide variety of colors such as: blue, yellow, white, orange, pink, lilac, green and red.

Colors meaning:

Pink peony: affective bond, loving feeling and romance

Red peony: wealth (in the East) and passion and exuberant beauty (in the West)

White peony: purity, shyness and modesty
