Fukui (福井市) is the capital o Fukui Prefecture and lies between the Sea of Japan and the mountains, with an area of 4,190.52km2. It received the status of city on April 1, 1889, with a population of 262.245 inhab., including about 3.850 foreign citizens, being 218 Brazilians, 27 Peruvians, 61 Americans, 697 Koreans, 962 Chinese, 313 Philippines 79 Thailand, 36 Indonesia , 122 Vietnam and others.

Fukui was largely destroyed during bombing in WWII in 1945 and again devastated by a major earthquake in 1948. In february 2006 Miyama City (Asuwa District), Shimizu City and Koshino Village were merged into Fukui.

Fukui City has many stunning gardens and parks, but Yokokan Garden is its gem and Eiheiji Temple is one of the most revered temples in Japan.

Fukui has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cool winters.
