Gotenba (御殿場市) is a town at the foot of Mount Fuji attracting many visitors, who use it as a base to explore Mount Fuji and the five lakes in the region, that is, Gotenba prospered with the attraction of climbing Mount Fuji, developing a holiday resort of summer after the creation of the Tokaido Railway in 1889. But the city's best-known attraction is the Chelsea Premium Outlets, which on weekends is packed with tourists.
After the construction of the Tomei Highway, the industrialization of the city grew even more.
Gotenba has a climate characterized by hot and humid summers, with relatively mild winters, it rarely snows in the city. September is the rainiest month. Temperatures are highest in August, at around 24°C, and the coldest month is January, reaching 1.2°C.
