Gyokoji Temple Wisteria Festival

Gyokoji Temple in Iwata City is famous for its clusters of wisteria flowers called Yuya no Nagafuji, over five feet long, a large and beautiful wisteria trellis formed by trees over 800 years old encircles the grounds.

The Yuya Nagafuji festival is known by this name because it is said that Princess Yuya Gozen of the Heian Period had a great love for wisteria and planted it in the Temple, so Yuya no Nagafuji means Princess Yuya’s long wisteria.

Visitors can also take commemorative photos with tourist ambassadors wearing traditional court ceremonial kimono, Noh Theater performances and outdoor tea ceremonies.

The best time to see Fuji Blossoms (Wisteria) is generally from mid-April to early May, during the Yuya no Nagafuji Festival, when many events are held annually.
