The Ikawa Buddha is an all-white concrete statue, 11 meters tall, weighing over 20 tons, which was inaugurated in Shizuoka City on November 1, 1980 and took approximately 4 years to build.
To reach the Great Buddha, one must climb about 220 steps, which takes about 5 minutes.
This Great Buddha was built over four years by Mr. Heiichiro Sato, a dentist at the Ikawa Clinic, as a symbol of gratitude for his 60 years of good health.
He was captivated by the purity of the Ikawa River and the beauty of the sunrise, a magnificent place where he had been able to live safely for over sixty years, and as an expression of gratitude, he erected a Buddha statue at this beautiful spot.
This made him want to honor the place with a Great Buddha endowed with the virtues of all Buddhas, so that everyone could worship him, regardless of their beliefs.
