Lake Miyoshi Festival

Miyoshi City Lake Festival is a wonderful festival with several boats decorated with hundreds of lanterns parading on the lake and underwater fireworks explode (star mines) drawing several large semicircular arcs of light on the surface of the water and about 1.200 fireworks fireworks are launched into the sky from the center of the lagoon to reflect and make the show unforgettable.

The festival takes place every year on the first Saturday of August even in case of rain (it is not cancelled) and the fireworks show starts between 6:40 pm and goes until 8:30 pm. Before the fireworks display a series of shows including dances, music shows, drumming, taiko shows and much more are performed.

Festival History

Lake Miyoshi was completed in 1959 and water from Kiso began to irrigate the fields, leaving the townspeople in awe. On August 5, 1989, a boat was decorated with mountain-shaped lanterns to give thanks for the blessings of the water, the boat was paraded along with a prayer boat. This is the beginning of the Lake Miyoshi Festival.

From 1990, fireworks began to be launched and from 1991, underwater stellar mine fires using the topography of the lagoon began. From 1991 to 1994, the number of lantern boats increased to the current ones, and underwater star mine fires became larger every year. Today the Lake Festival has become one of Miyoshi City’s summer traditions along with the Iijan Festival and the Oojouchin Festival (Giant Lantern Festival with Fireworks).
