Mayor of the city of Anjo apologizes after municipal officials deny food aid to the Brazilian

Japan Guide 2023-6-23

Two city officials questioned the 42-year-old Brazilian and treated her request for public assistance as if she were homeless and turned her down.

At the time, the woman lived in a city hall apartment, but her rent was overdue, so officials treated her with discrimination as a homeless person and said that people in these conditions would not be entitled to the benefit.

But, according to the Japanese government, there are guidelines that allow access to seikatsu hogo even if she has no place to live.

The Brazilian got his help, but decided to report the case to the Aichi Prefectural Lawyers Association, claiming to have been the target of discriminatory comments by authorities, such as “you should go back to your country”.

At a press conference, the mayor admitted that the conduct of employees was inappropriate and apologized this Thursday, June 22.
