Mother’s Day – Haha no Hi

Japan celebrates Mother’s Day (母の日) on the second Sunday of May.

Mother’s Day in Japan was celebrated on March 6, in honor of Empress Kojun’s (Emperor Akihito’s mother) birthday. But many historians claim that Mother’s Day was introduced by Christian missionaries in 1913.

However, during World War II, Western customs were completely banned in Japan. It was only after the end of the war that it was celebrated as Mother’s Day in Japan again. In 1949, Japanese society adopted the second Sunday in May as the official date for Mother’s Day.
