Japan passed a revised traffic law on Tuesday that imposes tougher penalties on drivers involved in road rage incidents.
The revised law defines road rage as obstructive driving, so a driver who puts other drivers in danger in front of another vehicle or suddenly slams on the brakes will be severely punished.
These drivers can be sentenced to prison for up to five years or fined one million yen. The driver’s license will be invalidated and they will not be able to get a new one for a certain period.
The National Police Agency says there were more than 15,000 cases caused by road rabies in Japan last year, about 2,000 compared to the year before.
The punishment for road rage will be stricter from the end of this month.
