Seki has a population of 87,121 inhabitants, including around 2,350 foreign citizens, 298 Brazilians, 6 Peruvians, 11 Americans, 451 Chinese, 72 Koreans, 161 Vietnamese, 168 Filipinos, 20 Indonesians, 18 Thais and others (data from City Hall).

Seki (関 市) is a Japanese city located in the center of Gifu prefecture. The total area of the city was 472.33 square kilometers, the highest point in the city is Mount Takinami with an altitude of 1.412 meters.

 

With the implementation of the modern township system, Seki was established in July 1889. And it was elevated to the rank of town on October 15, 1950. And in February 2005, the towns of Mugegawa and Mugi were merged, along with the villages. from Horado, Itadori and Kaminoho.

 

The city has a climate characterized by hot, humid summers and mild winters. September is considered the wettest month. Temperatures are highest in August reaching 28°C, and the lowest in January reaching 3.5°C.

 

Seki is widely known for its bladesmith since ancient times, City of Blades. Seki has been a major producer of knives, swords and other cutting implements for over 700 years. Major blade companies are headquartered in the city and produce the highest quality kitchen knives in both traditional Japanese style and Western style such as the Gyuto and Santoku.

 

During the year, there are numerous attractions and events related to blades that attract many tourists to the city. The most prominent of these is the Cutlery Festival. The festival is held in honor of the memory of the sword master Motoshige, the festival is also to wish prosperity to the city of blades. In the main area of the event, in the Cutlery Market, many knives, scissors and others are sold.

 

History    

 

Around 800 years ago, the original pioneers of original cutlery moved to Seki, where the masterful craftsmanship began to take root. Motoshige, the pioneer of the Seki blacksmithing, arrived in the city around 1229-1261.

 

It is said that there were over 300 blacksmiths from the mid to late Muromachi period (1336-1573).

During the Warring States period (1467-1568), the sword made in Seki (Seki Katana) was highly praised by Samurai “Does not bend / Does not break / Cuts well”, the praise received favored the city. The city began to grow with the development of blades.

 

Since citizens could no longer carry sword (katana), the city focused on making kitchen knives, scissors, and other types of blades. Due to its high quality, many Japanese have come to prefer products from Seki City. To this day, tourists come from all over the world, interested in buying Seki’s sharp blades.
