The Toyota Oiden Matsuri is the largest event in Toyota City (Aichi Prefecture), and the protagonists are the citizens who dance and sing to the rhythm of the Oiden melody! It’s a fabulous summer spectacle with dancing, drinking, eating, and one of the largest fireworks displays in the world.
On the last Saturday and Sunday of July, Toyota hosts the Oiden Matsuri (Oiden Festival) summer festival. Downtown Toyota is transformed for a weekend of festivities. Oiden is a word from the ancient Mikawa dialect of the region that means “Let’s go!”, and the Oiden cry (Odorumai!) means “Come here, let’s dance together!”
Saturday Festival
On Saturday, hundreds of teams of families, company colleagues, and neighborhood friends gather to practice for the much-anticipated Oiden festival, held downtown, where everyone dances the Oiden dance and sings Oiden music. It resembles a carnival of brightly colored costumes.
