Wakayama City │ 和歌山市

Wakayama (和歌山市) is the capital of Wakayama Prefecture, Kansai Province, divided in two by the Kinokawa River and bordered on the north by Osaka Mountains. Wakayama Prefecture is famous throughout Japan for its pickled salted plums (umeboshi) and tangerines (mikan).

 

In July 1945, the city of Wakayama was hit by a major air raid. Although post-war reconstruction was not easy, the terrain was reorganized and roads were built to gradually recover.

 

The city has a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and cold winters. Temperatures are highest in August reaching around 38.5°C, and lowest in January at around -6°C.
