Former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo dies after being shot during a speech

Abe died in hospital in Nara, where he was being treated after being shot in a street around 11:30 am on Friday.

Former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe, 67, was participating in the election campaign for the House of Representatives in Nara, when he started his speech in support of the local candidates of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLD) he was shot by the coast.

The police arrested Yamagami Tetsuya (山上徹也), a 41-year-old resident of Nara city, he was caught by security and handed over to the police. According to police, Abel was killed with a handcrafted weapon about 40 cm long, a handmade weapon seized at the scene. Police searched the suspect’s home and seized several handcrafted weapons.

He said during interrogation that he was dissatisfied with Abe so I shot him dead.

According to Defense Ministry officials, the suspect worked for the Maritime Self-Defense Force for three years, from 2002 to 2005.
