Great Buddha of Shurakuen

The Great Buddha of Shurakuen is taller than the Great Buddhas of Nara and Kamakura, standing 18.79 meters high, with a pedestal of 2.58 meters and a diameter of 23.63 meters. Its construction began in 1924 and it was consecrated in 1927 to commemorate the marriage of Emperor Showa.

This magnificent Buddha statue is located in Shurakuen Park in Tokai City, Aichi Prefecture, and is Japan’s first large-scale Buddha statue made of reinforced concrete. Erected on a hill overlooking Ise Bay, its magnificent setting has been highly praised, leading to its designation as a city cultural heritage site in 1983.

Over the years, the structural deterioration of the Great Buddha became a concern, and in 1984, the statue was covered with a layer of copper powder, among other extensive repairs carried out thanks to donations from local residents.

In addition to the Great Buddha of Shurakuen, there are also Kongorikishi statues, stone lanterns, incense burners, and a path leading to the sanctuary.

Starting at 5 PM, the Buddha statue is beautifully illuminated with various shades, allowing you to appreciate a variety of different colors.
