Emperor Naruhito’s birthday (Tennō tanjōbi – 天皇诞生日), celebrated on February 23, is a national holiday in Japan.
On February 23, the Imperial Palace opens its closed spaces to the public who wish to greet the Emperor. The Emperor, the Empress and other members of the Imperial Family appear on the balcony, giving a speech of thanks.
The Imperial Palace is opened to the public twice a year, on the Emperor’s birthday and on New Year’s Eve.
National Holiday: February 23rd (if February 23rd falls on a Sunday, the holiday will be transferred to Monday).
