One of the most beautiful artificial waterfalls in Japan is Niagara Falls (ナイアガラの滝), in the city of Shinshiro, Aichi. With a drop of 8 meters high and 100 meters wide, it is becoming a famous tourist spot.
The waterfall is also known as Nagashino Dam (長篠ダム), the dam sends water to the Nagashino Power Plant and the excess water hits the rocks and falls, resembling a natural waterfall, and is one of the three most beautiful artificial dams in Japan, one Hidden tourist gem in Aichi Prefecture.
The Nagashino Power Plant is Japan’s first vertical-axis hydraulic turbine power plant and began operating in 1912 and is located 900 meters downstream.
Locals call the waterfall Shinshiro Niagara and it is in front of a large inn called Hananoki Park.
In front of the waterfall there is a fishing spot called Hananoki Park Fishing Lake, where you can fish for trout, and on the other side of the street there is an inn with a restaurant where you can grill your fish and eat listening to the sound of the waterfall or taste the dishes typical of the region.
- Fee for fishing 1 rod: 2,000 yen (up to 0.5 kg of trout), if exceeded, 275 yen will be charged for each 100g.
- Fee for grilling fish and eating at the restaurant: 165 yen per 100g.
- Fee for grilling fish at the restaurant and not eating at the restaurant: 108 yen per 100g.
*Note: If you take the raw fish home, ice will be provided free of charge.
Parking
Tip >> for those visiting the waterfall, parking is paid and costs around 1,000 yen, but going down this street you can park in the small Ayu Waterfall parking lot (free), which is about a 5-minute walk from this place.
