Shimoda is a coastal city with an area of 104.38 square kilometers, located in the southeastern part of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture.

Blessed with tranquil nature and beautiful beaches, the city teems with tourists in the summer, especially surfers seeking waves. The waves at the beach can be steady, but they can sometimes develop into large, challenging tubes.

More than 70% of the city’s area is forested and wild, and it is rich in vegetation, and hot springs have been part of the daily lives of local residents since ancient times.

The Shimoda Sea boasts exceptional clarity and rich diversity. Most beaches have the highest AA water quality rating, boasting crystal-clear blue waters, white sand, and rocky areas. You can enjoy a variety of water activities, including surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, diving, snorkeling, sea kayaking, beach yoga, and fishing.

Shimoda is a port city founded in 1945 after the arrival of the Black Ships at the end of the Edo Period. When the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the United States and Japan was signed, the port was opened to the public. As a result, many famous figures from the history of the late Edo Period visited Shimoda, resulting in an area full of museums and historical sites.
