Kosai City │ 湖西市

Kosai City is located in the westernmost part of Shizuoka Prefecture. It is a beautiful city with a warm climate and abundant nature, surrounded by the Kosai Mountains, famous for their lush trails, the Pacific Ocean overlooking the horizon, and Lake Hamana, with its crystal-clear brackish waters.

Thanks to its location almost in the center of Honshu, the area has flourished as a transportation hub since ancient times, as can be seen at Arai Sekisho, the country’s only surviving checkpoint, and at Shirasuka-juku, where the old townscape remains and people, goods and information still circulate actively.

After the war, Kosai City was divided into two cities and three villages: Washizu City, Shirasuka City, Shinjo Village, Iride Village, and Chihata Village, and became Kosai City on April 1, 1955.

On January 1, 1972, Kosai City was established as the 21st city in Shizuoka Prefecture under the Special Municipal Law. 38 years later, on March 23, 2010, it merged with Arai City.
