Visa Renewal

The renewal request can be made 2 months before the expiration of the expiration period.

You do not have to pay to renew your visa, you can even go to the Immigration Department of your jurisdiction and apply for a visa in person. In case any document is missing, they will send a letter asking for it, so always try to check in before the visa expires.

Documents required to renew the NISSEI visa

  • 1 photo size 4 × 3 cm
  • Copy and original of valid passport
  • Copy and original of the Zairyu Card
  • Birth certificate (copy)
  • If married, marriage certificate (copy)
  • Birth certificate of father or mother of Nissei descendants (copy)
  • Grandparents’ marriage certificate (copy)
  • Koseki Tohon of grandfather or grandmother (original and valid for 3 months)
  • Completed Hoshonin form (guarantor)
  • Work Certificate (Zaishoku Shomeisho), issued by the company
  • Residence Certificate (Juminhyo), issued by the City Council
  • Gensen (proof of annual income) or the last three original Holerites
  • Nozeishomeisho (certificate of tax discharge), issued by the prefecture
  • Immigration Visa Renewal Application Form

Note: All documents must be accompanied by a Japanese translation.

Documents required to renew the SANSEI visa

  • 1 photo size 4 × 3 cm
  • Copy and original of valid Passport
  • Copy and original of the Zairyu Card
  • Birth certificate (copy)
  • If married, marriage certificate (copy)
  • Birth certificate of father or mother who is a Nissei descendant (copy)
  • Grandparents’ marriage certificate (copy)
  • Koseki Tohon of grandfather or grandmother (original and valid for 3 months)
  • Completed Hoshonin form (guarantor)
  • Work Certificate (Zaishoku Shomeisho), issued by the company
  • Residence certificate (Juminhyo), issued by the City Hall
  • Gensen (proof of annual income) or the last three original Holerites
  • Nozeishomeisho (certificate of discharge with taxes), issued by the prefecture
  • Immigration visa renewal request form
  • Civil and Federal Criminal Background Certificate for over 18 years
  • For children: Copy of parents’ passport and zairyu card

  • Great-grandparents marriage certificate (if there is no marriage registration in koseki)
  • Yonsei’s grandfather or grandmother’s birth certificate (certified or original copy)
  • Yonsei’s grandparents marriage certificate (certified or original copy)
  • Yonsei’s father or mother’s birth certificate (certified or original copy)
  • Marriage certificate of yonsei’s parents (certified or original copy)
  • Yonsei’s birth certificate (certified or original copy)
  • Completed Hoshonin form (guarantor)
  • Work Certificate (Zaishoku Shomeisho), issued by the company
  • Residence certificate (Juminhyo), issued by the City
  • Gensen (proof of annual income) or the last three original Holerites
  • Nozeishomeisho (certificate of discharge with taxes), issued by the prefecture
  • Immigration visa renewal request form
  • Civil and Federal Criminal Background Certificate for persons over 18
  • For children: Copy of parents’ passport and zairyu card

Documents required to renew the NON-DESCENDANTS visa (spouse of Nissei, spouse of Sansei)

  • 1 photo size 4 × 3 cm
  • Copy and original of the valid passport (of the spouse)
  • Copy and original of Zairyu Card (from spouse)
  • All documents of the Nissei or Sansei descendant spouse
  • Marriage Certificate with the descendant (copy)
  • Applicant’s Birth Certificate (copy)
  • Completed Hoshonin form (guarantor)
  • Work Certificate (Zaishoku Shomeisho), issued by the company
  • Residence certificate (Juminhyo), issued by the City Hall
  • Gensen (proof of annual income) or the last three original Holerites
  • Nozeishomeisho (certificate of discharge with taxes), issued by the prefecture
  • Immigration visa renewal request form
  • Civil and Federal Criminal Background Certificate

Necessary documents from Hoshonin (Guarantor)

Every foreigner must have a guarantor (HOSHONIN), an individual (can be a foreigner with a permanent visa or a Japanese citizen).

  • Signed form
  • Work certificate (zaishoku shoomeisho)
  • Certificate of residence (juuminhyoo)
  • Proof of Income and Tax Payment (gensen chooshuuhyoo)

If HOSHONIN is a firm or institution

  • Completed and signed form (stamped)
