Shinsei Daibutsu

The Great Buddha Daibutsu (新生大仏) is a bronze statue of Amida Buddha, which stands on the grounds of Narita Temple in Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture.

History

The Great Buddha was cast in 1939 by Kimura Kozaemon in memory of his son, who had died at the age of 20, and was enshrined in Kuhonji Park in Ichinomiya City.

At the time, the world was in the midst of World War II, and the Pacific War began two years later. As the war situation intensified, an order was issued to collect metal items, and the Great Buddha was donated in 1943.

In 1945, Ichinomiya City was hit by an air raid, and the Buddha lost its body.

In 1947, the head of the Great Buddha was discovered in Tsuruma Park in Nagoya and returned to its founder, Mr. Kimura Kozaemon, who worked hard for two years to restore the Buddha, and the Buddha was given the name Shinsei Daibutsu (New Great Buddha).

In 1955, the statue was enshrined as a Great Reborn Buddha at Narita Temple, the resting place for the souls of war victims and to wish for world peace.
