Koyasu Kobo Daishi

The statue of Koyasu Kobo Daishi was erected by Shinshiro Taki and is located atop Mount Kobo in Gamagori City.

It has a total height of 60 meters (the statue itself is 18.78 meters tall, the pedestal/base is 7 meters, the staff is 22 meters long, and the baby statue is 5 meters long). Construction of the statue began in 1934 by religious leaders in Nagoya City and was completed five years later, in 1939.

Koyasu is linked to the Shingon sect temples of Koyasan in the Kansai region. Near the statue, there is a coffee shop and the “Lovers’ Hill,” where couples can vow eternal love to each other by adding heart or rose-shaped messages, or by attaching padlocks to the railings of balconies with beautiful ocean views.

History

It is said that, during the Daido period (806-810), the monk Koyasu encountered a woman in difficult labor and prayed for her and the baby, saving both their lives. A statue of him holding the baby was then erected, and it is believed that he possesses the divine virtues of granting children, safe childbirth, and good health.
