Japanese Monkeys

Japanese monkeys are known to demonstrate the behavior of washing sweet potatoes and other foods in the river, first immersing sweet potatoes in water and then rubbing them against rocks. The behavior may be repeated several times before the food is consumed.

The process of washing sweet potatoes was first observed in a group of wild Japanese macaques on the island of Koshima, Japan, and was considered a pre-cultural behavior. Although the act of rubbing is quite common in monkeys, the behavior of rubbing objects in water, demonstrated by monkeys, is rare and interesting.

In Monkey Valley, this behavior can be easily observed during the monkeys’ feeding which takes place from 3:30 pm to 4:00 pm. Japanese primatologists worked together to help create the Japan Monkey Centre. The center was founded on October 17, 1956. The JMC aims to promote research, education, conservation, welfare and communication to the general public as it pertains to non-human primates. As of April 2014, the JMC became a Public Interest Foundation.
