Chiryu Matsuri is a festival with an ancient origin with over 260 years of tradition, held in the city of Chiryu, on the 2nd and 3rd of May. The floats weigh up to 5 tons, reach 7 meters in height and feature traditional folklore performances with puppets and marionettes.

At Chiryu Shrine, doll displays are placed for spectators.

There are two types of theater, puppets and marionettes. One, known as Dashibunraku (puppet theater representation on floats) and Karakuri (puppet representation, also on floats). It’s an old popular tradition and it takes three people to maneuver a puppet. Thanks to this division of roles, the dolls can come to life and move in a detailed and realistic way.

Puppet and puppet shows are performed in various locations throughout Japan, but performed aboard a float (float) during a festival is only done in Chiryu. That’s why the Chiryu Festival is very famous.
