Yonezu River Festival – Nishio City

Nishio City’s Floating Lantern and Fireworks Festival, known as the Yonezu River Festival, is held annually on the Saturday of Obon.

This festival began years ago with the aim of comforting the spirits of victims of war, accidents or drowning, and those who died in disasters such as earthquakes. They place the lantern to comfort and make their requests to the spirits.

Initially, only the Lantern Festival was held, but around 20 years ago, fireworks were introduced.

Many visitors come every year to make their wishes by placing lanterns in the lake, coloring the surface of the Yonezu River. A spectacle with over 2,000 lanterns floating along the river, illuminating the surface, and more than 3,000 fantastic fireworks explosions in the sky.
