Tokoname (常滑市) is a Japanese city located in Aichi Prefecture. It received city status on April 1, 1954, and has a population of 58,479, of which approximately 2,044 are foreign residents, including about 419 Brazilians, 425 Vietnamese, 336 Filipinos, 342 Chinese, 110 Koreans, and 412 of other nationalities.
It is a city blessed with a rich cultural environment, nurtured by the ancient tradition of Tokoname pottery, with a history spanning 1,000 years, a coastline stretching 15 kilometers from north to south along Ise Bay, and tourist resources such as abundant agricultural products.
The history of pottery in Tokoname begins in the Heian Period (794-1185) with the manufacture of ceramic pots and containers. The city specialized in the production of teapots, bottles, containers for transporting water and sake, materials for storing sutras and scrolls, tiles, bricks, and pipes.
At the height of ceramic production in Tokoname, there were over 3,000 kilns scattered throughout the city, and even today it’s possible to get an idea of what Tokoname was like by visiting the city’s oldest neighborhood.
Furthermore, Chubu Centrair International Airport opened on February 17, 2005, and the Aichi International Exhibition Center “AICHI SKY EXPO” opened in August 2019, attracting tourists from all over the world.
