Kasugai City is a city in Aichi Prefecture that developed along the Shonai River. To avoid confusion with other municipalities of the same name, it is sometimes referred to as Owari Kasugai City, and the city has a total area of 92.78 square kilometers.
The city was founded on June 1, 1943, in the midst of the Pacific War, when the four towns and villages of Katsukawa, Toriimatsu, Shinoki, and Takarai merged to form a military-industrial city with factories in Toriimatsu and Takarai. However, after the war, efforts were made to encourage agriculture and attract factories, and in 1950, with the attraction of Oji Paper’s Kasugai Mill, the city began its trajectory as an inland industrial city.
On January 1, 1958, under the Municipal Establishment Promotion Law, Kasugai City merged with Takazoji City and Sakashita City, becoming a city with a population of over 70,000.
The population surpassed 200,000 in 1974 and 300,000 in 2005. The population has continued to grow since then and currently has a population of 307,000, making it a medium-sized city in the Chubu region.
