Bentenjima Beach – Hamamatsu

Bentenjima Beach is very popular in the summer because it is a quiet place and children can play a lot since it is a safe place. It offers free cold water showers.

In addition to the beach, another attraction is the large 18-meter red Torii (Shinto Gate) that stands over the lake, one of the symbols of Hamanako. Many photographers visit the gate (Torii) to capture the sunset, which appears in the middle or behind the torii.

In the past, Lake Hamana in Hamanako (Bentenjima) had no connection to the sea. Its connection with the sea occurred after an earthquake in 1498 that caused a tidal bore (the meeting of the river waters with the sea), opening the passage where the bridge that connects Hamamatsu to Toyohashi is now built.

Because it contains both fresh and salt water, the proliferation of marine species is facilitated. There are 338 types of fish, 59 types of crustaceans and 84 types of molluscs, in addition to seaweed (nori).

You can see all the species at the Wat Aquarium, which displays live species of fish from Lake Hamana in Hamamatsu. It is an aquarium for children to study and learn about the fish that live here, and you can even touch the live species, very exciting.

And in the hottest season of the year, Bentenjima Beach becomes the stage for the Gateway Festival, which takes place every year in August. It is a modern style where local people come together to liven up the area around Bentenjima so that young people and foreigners can have fun, with music, art, skateboarding, BMX, fireworks and an international food area, including Brazilian food. A festival that attracts about 40 thousand people.
