A Brazilian was arrested for stealing information from someone else’s smartphone and using it to make purchases.
The suspect arrested on suspicion of fraud is Dos Santos Thiago Enrique, 39, a Brazilian who calls himself a web designer.
According to police, Dos Santos is suspected of using dots in the name of a 50-year-old woman from Osaka Prefecture to defraud approximately 8,200 yen worth of colored contact lenses at an optical store in the Tenpaku district of Nagoya city, last month.
During the investigation, he denies the accusations.
But personal information was leaked from the woman’s smartphone through so-called “phishing”, and Dos Santos appears to have used this information to hijack the smartphone’s “eSIM”, which is necessary for communication.
The personal information of more than 100 people was found on Dos Santos’ computer and police are investigating whether he may have committed additional crimes.
