Iijan and Oojouchin Festival – Miyoshi City Giant Lantern Festival

Come enjoy two days of the “Matsuri” Festival in Miyoshi City

With two days of festivities, you can enjoy the traditional stalls, and on the first day there will be the Iijan Matsuri (Festival), where several groups will be dancing the two festival choreographies.
And on the second and final day, the Oojouchin Matsuri (Festival), with three large paper lanterns measuring 11 meters high and 6.5 meters in diameter, illuminating the summer night, is a unique spectacle. It is one of the most famous festivals in Aichi-ken prefecture. In 1927, the Shin-Aichi Shinbun (newspaper company) planned to select Aichi’s “New Ten Notable Sights,” and Miyoshi Inarikaku Shrine was selected as the second.

In memory of this selection and its 60th anniversary, Yazo Nonoyama, a citizen of Miyoshi-cho, dedicated a large lantern, which was first lit at the summer festival in 1929. The other two were dedicated in 1988 by the Miyoshi municipal government.
And since the 1993 summer festival, Oyashi accompaniment music and Bounote sword fights have been featured. And in the evening, there’s a small fireworks display. The festival is held in late August each year.

IIJAN – Street Festival

On Saturday, near Miyoshi Inarikaku, starting at 5 p.m., a dance festival will take place featuring the festival’s original songs, Jandalarin and Just Rollin.

Approximately 36 major groups will perform with a variety of themes, and the participants’ performances and enthusiasm will be judged to determine the best group of the year.
