Illuminated lanterns that bring out the feeling of ancient Japanese streets
Every year in early to mid-August, the Tankororin festival takes place, where lanterns called TANKORORIN are lit on the old streets of the Asuke neighborhood in Toyota City. Enjoy a stroll through the streets of Asuke decorated with beautiful lanterns, cylindrical lanterns made from bamboo baskets and Japanese washi paper.
The Tankororin lanterns have become popular as one of the summer attractions in the Asuke Old Town. In addition, mini concerts such as guitar playing, Asuke’s Bon-Odori dance with live shamisen performances, and rakugo will be held for free, making the evening stroll even more enjoyable.
Odori Dance
This event started with a few lanterns in the year 2002, with the cooperation of residents, now the number of “Tankororin” exceeds 700 units, so that people in and around Toyota City can familiarize themselves with the summer tradition and culture of Asuke Ward.
