Hamamatsu Zoo is a zoo located near Lake Hamana, boasting a beautiful natural environment and was the first zoo to open in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1950. With over 400 animals from 120 species, Hamamatsu Zoo has the largest number of primates in Japan, including the lowland gorilla and the Sumatran orangutan.
Another unmissable attraction is the golden lion tamarin, which are small monkeys with beautiful golden fur. They are very precious because, in Japan, they can only be seen here (their original habitat is in Brazil — an endangered species).
The sprawling property covers an area of 146,000 square meters and makes use of the natural, undulating terrain to project the animals into the middle of a forest. As you follow the path towards the animals, you can hear the birds chirping and the insects buzzing, and you can also stop to admire the plants along the way.
The landscape will provide a sense of rest for your body that is exhausted from a hard day’s work and suffering from lack of exercise.
The highest hill in the gardens is 34 meters above sea level.
And the zoo provides several events for visitors.
